Senior Network Engineer
 
 

Main Purpose: The Network Engineer, a member of the Network Engineering group, is a computer professional with experience in complex data and telecommunications systems design, development, management, and evaluation.  The Network Engineer is a key participant of a high performance team responsible for maintaining, implementing and providing operational support of an advanced state of the art network for a large government agency. Domain expertise ranges from cable plant up through application protocols with particular emphasis on routing and network management protocols (e.g. OSPF, BGP, SNMP) integrated network services (e.g. multicast, QoS, VoIP, IPTV), and working knowledge of complex computing management systems including system administration, performance monitoring, problem management, change management, records management and disaster prevention and recovery

Job Functions and Associated Competencies:

  • Maintain a complex, mission-critical, Cisco based switched/routed environment including services integration, installation and support.
  • Ensure stability, integrity and efficient operation of the network and in-house information systems that support core organizational functions.
  • Provide field support, device installation, operation, and maintenance.
  • Support Network Monitoring and Network Management activities.
  • Provide Technical Documentation as needed.
  • Resolve complex network problems using advanced troubleshooting skills.
  • Provide technical expertise in interfacing with customers, team members and suppliers
  • Maintain an in-depth understanding of the applications and services that depend on the Local Area Network and interact with the Wide Area Network to ensure reliable performance.
  • Build test procedures and diagram network design recommendations.
  • Stay current in learning emerging technologies and introducing cost-effective solutions to continually improve the quality and performance of network and network-enabled services.

 

Experience, Education and Training

  • Bachelor's degree computer science or other related technical discipline plus at least 5+ years of professional IT experience.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Cisco Hardware and Internetworking Operating System (IOS)
  • Expertise in Information Technology including knowledge of routing and switching, TCP/ IP, EIGRP, OSPF, QoS, and firewalls.
  • Advanced understanding of LAN and WAN network technologies.
  • Experience with Network Mgmt; MRTG, Cisco Works, network probes and other network management tools
  • Experience with Cisco Secure ACS and ASA
  • Knowledge of IP telephony and video conferencing
  • Working knowledge of a diverse range of technologies;  Multicast, Wireless, IPV6, IP/TV, Content Distribution, WAN Acceleration
  • Expert understanding of the latest security issues, threats and best practices and technologies being used to counter them
  • Experience evaluating technologies. 
  • Project documentation/ time management skills. Visio network documentation required
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, as well as excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to obtain security clearance.
